Five Sessions You Absolutely Have to Attend at Autodesk University

It’s been a year since DroneDeploy and Autodesk partnered to bring you seamless integration between BIM 360 and DroneDeploy. This integration seamlessly connected Autodesk® BIM 360™ to DroneDeploy and overlayed design files onto high-resolution aerial maps, making accurate measurements that you can use to compare design to reality.

Other key features included:

  • Logging in with your Autodesk account and connecting to BIM 360 documents
  • Easily import Plans from BIM 360 as Overlays in DroneDeploy, and automatically update plans within DD if revisions are made in BIM 360
  • Automatically export Progress Photo Reports
  • Export orthomosaic, elevation, and plant health maps to your BIM 360 project.

And, in recognition of this partnership, we’re taking a look at five sessions you absolutely can’t miss this week at Autodesk University in Las Vegas—including one led by DroneDeploy’s very own Jay Ryoo.

Drones, Fire, and Virtual Reality: 21st-Century Tools for Sustainable Development

As our global population increases, remote indigenous communities are compelled to develop to accommodate growth and responsible tourism. Technology is now available to support and promote the development of remote communities in an environmentally and culturally sustainable manner. Specifically, photogrammetry and virtual reality (VR) enable effective decisions about sensitive development by empowering stakeholders with intuitive, immersive experiences of site conditions from new points of view.

This session will present a recent project on the remote Fiji island of Vorovoro, executed as a joint effort between an indigenous island tribe, a university construction management program, a social enterprise promoting positive social impact, and a global AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) software corporation. The collaborative team created a feasibility study for a dam to retain freshwater on the island; developed new data workflows; and used drones, VR, and cloud-based collaboration platforms with a Forge partner.

This session will be led by Dace Campbell, Construction Account Manager in Education at Autodesk, and Dr. Tony Lamanna, Chair, Del E. Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University. You can check it out on Tuesday, November 19 from 8:00 AM - 09:00 AM at Lido 3103, Level 3.

I've Got Issues: Mapping Issues Tracking Throughout the Construction Lifecycle

If there's anything that ties everyone together through the construction process, it is issues tracking. In this interactive workshop, we will work together to collaboratively key tools, moments, and handoffs in issues tracking, pre-RFI, and RFI process from design collaboration to facilities handoff.

Please note: Autodesk Feedback Workshops are small-group interactive sessions to explore and receive feedback on future Autodesk offerings. The workshops may require participants to have a specific background and product experience, as described in the Audience, Industry and Product fields found here.

This workshop will be led by Beth Schwindt, Research Manager at Autodesk on Wednesday, November 20 from 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM in Toscana 3806, Level 3.

Drones in Construction: The Growth of a Drone Program

This session will be a deep dive into using drones on your job site and the best practices to making drones the next great tool on your job site—further, we’ll look at how Layton Construction went from 5 drones to 30 in a year, and the process and tools it took to grow that drone fleet. P

Partnering with DroneDeploy has been key to Layton’s grow as a construction company. We provide the tools that empower them to grow their own fleet, as does their great customer service. Learn how to take your workflow into ReCap software and Revit software to get the most out of scans.

This session will be led by Jay Ryoo, Product & Engineering Manager at DroneDeploy. Joining him on stage will be David Lim, AEC Technical Solutions Executive at Autodesk, Austin Lay, Visualization Coordinator at Layton Construction; and Jon Ferguson, Corporate Manager of VDC, also at Layton Construction.

Due to the popularity of this session, they will be holding dual sessions, the first occurring on Wednesday, November 20th from 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM. The second session will take place on Thursday, November 21 from 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM. Both sessions will take place in Marcello 4503, Level 4.

Take to the Sky to Capture the Ground—Drones, Photogrammetry, and the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection

DroneDeploy

Autodesk ReCap Pro software

This course will focus on the workflow and best practices for capturing aerial photography, processing the images in ReCap Photo software and ReCap Pro software, and utilizing the output in Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection applications such as InfraWorks software, Civil 3D software, and Revit software.

This session will be led by Matt Wunch, BIM Consultant at ARCAT, Inc. It will take place on Tuesday, November 19 from 4:30 PM - 05:30 PM in Lando 4302, Level 4.

Drone 2 Design: Harness the power of the AEC Collection

In this session, we explore workflows of utilizing data captured via an unmanned aerial vehicle, one for Civil Engineering, and one for Architecture. For Civil, the end result is an existing surface and orthomosaic photo, and for Architecture, we discuss acquiring building orbits and modeling in Revit.

In this session, we take a look at two different workflows of utilizing data captured via an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), one for Civil Engineering & Surveying (CES), and the other for Architecture. For CES, we cover best practices from processing drone data in Recap Pro, then taking those results into Infraworks and ultimately Civil 3D. The end result is a TIN surface and georeferenced orthomosaic photo for existing base file creation. For Architecture, we describe the data capture process from acquiring multiple building orbits, and working with that data in Recap Mobile for the iPad Pro, and ultimately a usable model in Revit.

This session will be led by Justin Ehart, CAD Manager, Civil Engineering & Surveying at Ware Malcomb. It will take place on November 21, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM in Lido 3105, Level 3.

The Week Ahead

These are just five of the many exciting sessions happening this week at Autodesk University, and if it were possible to attend every single one, we’d suggest it. This event is primed to be Autodesk’s finest, and DroneDeploy is thrilled to be a part of it.
